A randomized trial in South Africa gave pregnant women 2 grams/day of choline and found significantly better recognition memory in their infants at 12 months. The gap A 2023–2024 Chinese cohort study (256 mother-infant pairs) found average late-pregnancy choline intake was only 343 mg/day — well below the 450 mg/day adequate intake. Only 1.56% of pregnant women met the standard. The highest-intake quartile showed statistically significant differences in infant Mental Development Index (MDI) and Psychomotor Development Index (PDI) scores. What this means This is not about "IQ boosting." It's about optimizing a critical developmental window. The effect is measurable, but modest at the individual level. At the population level, small shifts in average development translate into large economic and educational outcomes. DHA: Real But Inconsistent What the research shows A 2024 systematic review found that n-3 fatty acid supplementation during pregnancy or breastfeeding improves language ability. Direct supplementation in full-term infants improves later intelligence. But the same review says evidence for overall cognitive ability is "insufficient." Why the effect looks weaker than choline Large randomized trials of DHA alone show unstable IQ effects. A Norwegian study found higher IQ at age 4 in children whose mothers took high-dose fish oil — but the difference disappeared by age 7. Likely reasons: baseline DHA levels vary, genetics matter, and DHA needs choline to work optimally. Artificial Dyes: A Quantifiable "Subtraction" Benefit The numbers A 2016 CSPI report synthesized multiple meta-analyses: about 8% of ADHD children may have symptoms triggered or worsened by synthetic food dyes. Removing dyes from the diet improved behavior by more than 50% in some children. A real effect size A 2007 Lancet randomized double-blind trial found children who drank beverages with artificial dyes scored significantly higher on a global hyperactivity composite than the placebo group, with an effect size of 0.20 (95% CI: 0.01–0.39). That's small for one child. But at population scale, it means a meaningful number of children might avoid medication or reduce dosage. Policy momentum The FDA launched a national initiative in 2025 to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, targeting six remaining certified colors (Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3) by end of 2027. General Mills, Nestlé, and Conagra have committed to removing them by 2026–2027. Lead: The Most "Expensive" Neurotoxin The quantified loss A 2021 study using US nationally representative data (NHANES 1999–2010) calculated that blood lead exposure only during infancy (12–24 months) causes $46.2 billion per year in lost lifetime earnings from IQ point loss. Unequal burden Black infants lost an average of 1.78 IQ points, Hispanic infants 1.15, white infants 1.21. Average lifetime income loss for Black infants was $47,116 — 46–55% higher than white and Hispanic infants. 74% of the loss came from blood lead levels below 5 μg/dL — the old "safe" threshold. Why this connects to nutrition Lead interferes with iron, zinc, and calcium absorption — the same nutrients the brain needs. Nutritional interventions (adequate iron and calcium) can reduce lead absorption somewhat. But the real fix is eliminating environmental exposure. Ultra-Processed Foods: Mental Health Risk, Quantified The association A 2022 meta-analysis (385,541 participants) found high ultra-processed food intake associated with 44% higher odds of depressive symptoms (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.14–1.82). Longitudinal studies show 22% increased risk of later depression (HR 1.22, 95% CI 1.16–1.28). For children specifically A 2026 umbrella review found convincing evidence linking UPF intake to shortened sleep and insomnia in children. Highly suggestive evidence linked it to depression, poor sleep quality, sleep problems, and common mental disorders. An Honest Caveat "Raising IQ by X points" needs careful framing. Nutrition interventions have modest effect sizes and are entangled with genetics, education, and environment. The choline study's 1.4-point gain was on a 10-point memory scale, not an IQ scale. But at the population level, even a 1–2 point average IQ shift produces measurable changes in education and earnings. That's exactly the logic of the lead study: $46 billion/year in losses came from an average loss of less than 2 IQ points. The real value of policy isn't "making every child a genius." It's removing the preventable factors that are systematically dragging down the average.
